Poisonous mushrooms. They’re all definitely mushrooms.

Food is an important part of Japanese culture, and plays a huge roll in Japan’s image overseas. When most foreigners think of Japanese food, they’ll undoubtedly think of sushi. Smiling Sushi Roll marries the Japanese love of food with an artistic eccentricity that makes for one very interesting book.

Illustrator Kiyoshi Takayo was reborn as sushi artist “Tama-chan” in 2005, when she started mixing her love of food with her love of art, creating sushi rolls filled with pictures that range from Edvard Munch’s The Scream to cats to genitalia.

Smiling Sushi Roll is a beautifully photographed collection of images of Tama-chan’s work, with a recipe for The Scream added at the back of the volume so the more daring among us can try to eat these delicious designs!
