Foreign Collection Of ‘Samurai’ Photographs Appear Online

Old photographs of Japanese samurai

This collection of old “samurai” photographs, apparently curated by a foreigner, have been reposted on Hamusoku.com, and are getting Japanese netizens talking.

The source of the photographs is not revealed, but for the most part they show a bygone age, albeit a slightly later period than might originally be assumed. Most of the photographs appear to be hand-coloured prints — most likely postcards for tourism purposes — and are were probably taken in the early twentieth century — apart from those of Mishima Yukio, that is.

Hamusoku netizens enjoyed looking at the collection — we hope you do too.

Is no. 6 one of those people who show up at tourist spots?

ハムスターちゃんねる:

Wow, the image of Japan that people have abroad is pretty different from the reality.

ハムスターちゃんねる:

Looking at Japan from a foreign country,
must have felt kinda like it was a small island across the sea where fairies lived.

What the hell is Okamura [Japanese comedian from comedy duo Ninety-Nine] getting up to in no. 12?

ハムスター名無し:

Thought No. 12 was Okamura.

ハムスター名無し:

Kinda nice when the straightman Yabe [the other member of the duo Ninety-Nine] isn’t chasing after him.

But wow, just think that there are so many photos remaining of this era.
Weren’t some of these taken in modern times?

ハムスター名無し:

For the most part, these are tourism photos that were probably taken slightly later — you can see that if you look at the hairstyles in the photos.
