Ample Japanese love counsellor Hanebayashi Yuzu was recently featured in a Nikkan SPA! magazine feature, encouraging more voluptuous women to take heart and have confidence in their own charms. In particular, Hanebayashi pointed out that there were plenty of men who like larger ladies, but the women themselves simply don’t believe it.
While Hanebayashi’s encouragement of women who are less than stick thin is a refreshing change in a culture where dieting can reach dangerous extremes, Japanese netizens from Hamusoku.com were less than accommodating of Hanebayashi’s position.

Both men and women have a tendency to think that if someone is fat, this is the primary reason they’re not attractive to the opposite sex. On that note, the love counsellor Hanebayashi Yuzu, who is herself 103 kg [around 227 lbs], weighs in, saying ‘Fat= Not Sexy is an Assumption’.
‘First of all, sexy, voluptuous women don’t see themselves as fat. Rather, they’re not stuck on the fact that they’re fat. That is to say, I understood that it’s just an assumption to say that plump= unattractive.’
‘Because the value judgement “if you’re fat you’re not sexy” really has been imprinted onto the minds of Japanese people by this kind of media information, even when a voluptuous woman is with a man, she has a tendency to be servile, and think “Even if he was with someone like me…” This defeatist aura is conveyed to their partner, and consequently the woman becomes unattractive. And what’s more, as Hanebayashi sees it, recently it’s become easier for voluptuous women in particular to get male attention.
