Eyeball-Licking Fetish Causes Eye Patch Epidemic Among Kids

eyeball licking popular among young Japanese students

A disturbing trend among younger Japanese school children has become one of the most popular recent threads on internet compilation site Naver Matome.

The post below, which has already been retweeted over 10,000 times, gathered information from the Japanese internet about eyeball-licking in an grade 6 elementary school class (usually aged around 12 years old), suggesting that for the students of the school it is apparently part of normal dating practice among their peers.

But netizens were truly shocked by the post, suggesting that the trend should be taken with a pinch of salt, and many are unable to understand why on earth eyeball licking might have become so popular…

From Naver Matome:

Eye Patches Trend in Class?

“Eye Patch Now” (Indie Music Information)

Reference: bandup.in

“From the beginning of this year, styes were practically epidemic in my class. At first the staff didn’t pay much attention to it, but when there were five kids or ten kids in a single class who all had eye patches, it really caught the attention of the adults. Even when homeroom teachers, who thought it strange, would question the students, all they’d say was that they didn’t know anything about it. We held an emergency staff meeting about this strange occurence, but the cause of it remained unclear.”

Is Eyeball-Licking The Reason For The Eye Patches?

“After class one day, I went into the equipment store in the gymnasium to tidy up. The door had been left open, and when I looked inside, a male pupil and a female pupil had their faces close together and were kind of fumbling around. Could it be bullying? I wondered, but when I had a good look, the boy was licking the girl’s eye! Surprised, a shouted “What are you doing? Stop it at once!” and the two of them were so shocked they jumped apart. The girl burst into tears, and the boy just went bright red and was shaken up. At any rate, to try to calm them down I took them to the janitor’s room and listened to their story.” (Aforementioned Mr. Y)

After having persuaded the two of them, who were as quiet as mice, he tried to ask them about what had happened. They told him bit by bit. The two of them had moved up to year 6 this year and were going out together. As an extension of acts like kissing and touching each other’s bodies, they were licking each other’s eyeballs. When Mr. Y asked them why they were doing such a thing, the male pupil said, “Because it’s popular in our class. It’s not just us two anyway. Everyone’s doing it…”

Mr. Y immediately told the school staff the story. A classroom assembly for the year 6 students was held, and when each homeroom teacher questioned the students, it was revealed that a surprising one third of the kids had done “eyeball licking”, or had had their eyeballs licked.

Does It Feel Good To Have Your Eyeballs Licked?

I’ve never done it, but the eyeballs are mucosal membranes, so I think that is a factor which means the eyeball could well be an erogenous zone. But to lick such a place…I think that the sense of corruption that comes from doing that probably also increases sexual tension.

The Dangers Of Eyeball Licking

The eyeball can be prone to bacterial conjunctivitis caused by a bacteria called trachoma, which if left untreated can damage eyesight irreversably. By the way, trachoma is the same bacteria as the bacteria that causes chlamidiya. If you have sexual contact with someone, including eyeball licking, without realising that you are infected with trachoma, there is the possibility that you could also be infected with chlamidiya. A friend of mine got infected with chlamidiya from someone with trachoma without knowing, and almost died from a ruptured fallopian tube during an ectopic pregnancy. It appears that young people today will engage in eyeball licking as though it’s completely normal, but I think that they’d be better off if they stopped.

Look, the thing with eyeballs is that no matter how much you lick them or get them licked, it won’t turn you on — this makes even less sense to me than scatology. It’s just stupid, there’s excitement. Just an unpleasant sensation.

Shiranu ga hana — ignorance is bliss. Hehe. Anyway, who knows, it may just be one teacher making up lies. But the Japanese internet is talking about it.

Elementary, dating and eye-ball licking shouldn’t be in one sentence.Come to think about it eye-ball licking shouldn’t be in any sentence.

  • Flora

So THAT’s where it comes from! A music video from a (fairly popular) Japanese band I like had the singer’s eye licked by a chick. I just thought they did it to be weird, but apparently it’s been going on for awhile.

Or did the band start the trend among the kids…..?

  • Eimi1003

I highly doubt this is ‘popular’ on a nation wide basis…just a tiny minority of idiot kids in some places doing this….the internet media over-hypes ‘trends’.Move along, nothing to see….the acts of the kids DO NOT represent the vast majority of Japanese kids. This is NOT a nationwide trend whatsoever.

  • mormollio

I’m 18 and can barely handle touching my own eye to put on a damn contact, and elementary kids are licking each other’s eyes cause it possibly gets them off? the fck?

    • Brett

Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it ㅋㅋㅋ

      • YourSupremeCommander

Brett would love to personally make you a believer, should I get you guys a room?

    • never_wore_zubaz

I started wearing contacts over 30 yrs ago, when I was in middle school… pretty much got over the “eek i’m touching my own eyeball” thing after 2 or 3 days.

Maybe Brett could help you get over your irrational fear with some sweet eyeball mashing?

… year six is 6th grade, right?

When did kids get so pervy?! I mean… BACK IN MY DAY we were limited to talking about doing adult things, not actually doing anything. Touching was even less likely. shakes fist* (get off my lawn, you damn kids!)

Also,… a little weirded out. Kids these days….

    • markus peg

I agree with you, but maybe the Japanese culture means its different for them…?

      • lonetrey / Dan

Hmm, I guess so. But I think as I’ve grown older, I’ve gotten more and more weirded out by younger children.

Though, I’m not as bad as a lot of my friends at my age, they just straight up can’t stand younger people at all.

    • Eimi1003

These kids do not represent all or most kids in Japan. Please don’t act like this a mainstream, nationwide phenomenon; it’s not. I can name many different things popular among some kids that are MUCH more popular than this. More kids like the Nameko characters than licking eyeballs. More kids like certain animes or card games than licking eyeballs, and so on.

I feel so sorry for the majority of ordinary Japanese kids who are just living a normal life, to be painted with the same brush by sensational articles and gullible adults who believe this represents most Japanese kids/youth.

  • ChuckRamone

What if your eye got infected with genital warts and you grew some on your eyeball or eyelids? That would have to be worse than a sty.

    • David

It would cause blindness. It is not unheard of that eyes become infected with STDs, it almost always leads to blindness if not quickly treated (eyes are a very delicate organ)..

This is what happens when you censor everything and anything that has to do with sex. Kids will explore, and inevitably discover some weird shit when they have no idea what they’re supposed to be doing – it’s human nature.

My niece in Tokyo is 13 and she’s never even heard of any of this. This is no way popular. It’s what a fringe group of idiots does. Leave it to the internet to make a retarded fringe minority into a majority.

This story is completely fictitious. Its source was not Naver Matome, but Bucchi News, published by Core Magazine, one of the sleaziest subculture publishers in Japan. The company was raided as recently as April 19 of this year on suspicion of violating juvenile pornography laws. The people who translated it and posted it on this site deserve to receive a public lashing. YOU IDIOTS!!!

  • Vadim
    • besudesu

Yeah, this article started with Schreiber. Fine, he’s right, the rest of the Western media effectively stole the jC translation, largely without citation. I don’t know what they pay their “Tokyo correspondents” for. But it irritates me somewhat that Schreiber has the audacity to blame me for translating it in the first place, when it was attracting a lot of online attention, and that was the only reason I translated it on what was otherwise a really slow day. He seems to completely miss the point of this website — and had he read the Japanese reactions to the article, it would have been pretty clear that no one really believed it, and everyone thought it was the strangest thing they’d heard. Oh, and Mr. Schreiber, who implies that we’re basically sensationalising Japan, is a serious journalist. His books?: “Tokyo Confidential: Titillating Tales From Japan’s Wild Weeklies” and “The Dark Side: Infamous Japanese Crimes and Criminals”.

And now he’s trying to make a buck off us, too.

      • Vadim

Yeah, I’m sorry that this happened to you. The “weird Japan” trope is so ingrained in the West that one can apparently mystify and sensationalize Japan without really intending to – the audience (and “media outlets”) will just hear what they want to hear, resulting in misunderstandings that are, in the words of US diplomat Chas Freeman, “too delicious to invite correction”. On the bright(-ish) side, it also means that it’s unlikely that Schreiber’s article will go as viral as the original story.

        • besudesu

I couldn’t have put it better myself. And the fact that regular readers like you understand the concept of the site is all that matters to us. So, 誠にありがとうございます!It is certainly a sad sign of how the West views Japan that these are the stories that go viral. And it’s equally demonstrative of the fact that a lot of Western news sources exploit the unpaid labour of bloggers.

          • Bystander

If I understand it correctly, the eyeball licking story didn’t originate on Naver Matome, but they got it from Yomerumo, which got it from Bucchi News, an outfit with a police record for obscenity and distribution of kiddy porn. I went to the kombini and looked at one of Core Magazine’s publications — it was borderline smut. If you have doubts about the story’s credibility, maybe you should think twice before you post it. Just sayin’

          • besudesu

You also seem to miss the point. Regardless of whether or not this story was from Bucchi News, it appeared as one of the most popular stories by far on Ceron.jp that day. Therefore, it was translated here as a Naver Matome thread, in the same way as it appeared on Naver Matome. We simply translate popular threads on popular websites, along with the source of the translation, on a given day. The links to the sources of the Naver Matome thread were also presented in the same way as they were on Naver Matome, so if someone were to come to this site, see the story, and decide to run it without our permission elsewhere, then they could have easily followed those links to the source. Our readers also saw what all those netizens who read the Japanese thread saw. You saw the comments they made about it. They were shocked and skeptical. People who read it here made their own judgement, which in almost every case were the same as the Japanese netizen responses.

          • Bystander

I didn’t miss the point — I just don’t agree with it. I don’t want to sound like I’m preaching, but when the sole criteria for selecting contents is the number of hits on other sites, you leave zero room for relevance, responsibility and grown-up common sense. So in the end you have to ask yourself if you’re truly satisfied with the values created from your efforts.

  • http://tycio.livejournal.com/ Ty

For everyone who is all “this doesn’t make sense” or “this would just hurt” keep in mind that there are masochists and that even if this was painful it could be related to that.
