Police officials were rather embarrassed last week when bones discovered at a construction site in Akishima, Tokyo, initially reported as human remains, turned out to be pork bones upon closer examination. Netizens had a field day with the many possibilities for puns and word play that this story presented, with some still skeptical that the new revelation in the case might just be a police cover-up. Cause of death for the unfortunate swine is still pending.

From TBS News:

Bones Discovered at Residential Demolition Site Turn Out to Be Pork Bones

The morning of March 23, bones were discovered on the premises of a residential property in Akishima, Tokyo, but when the Metropolitan Police examined them closely, they realized that they were pork bones.

At 10 a.m. on March 23, a 110 call was made reporting that “what looks like human bones were found among the dug up soil” at a residential demolition site in Jogawaracho, Akishima.

When policemen rushed to the scene, they found what appeared to be rib bones among the dirt. Afterwards, once the Metropolitan Police examined them more closely, they realized that they were pork bones.

It seems that a man had previously been living in the residence, but demolition of the building had been in progress since March 10.

I read somewhere that it was the bones of the person who commissioned the demolition, but of course I never guessed that it was a pig.
