Shingeki no kyojin or as it’s known to English speakers, “Attack On Titan”, depicts a fictional world in which the world has been invaded by a race of giants known as “Titans”, forcing what remains of mankind to take shelter within massive walled cities.

Originally a manga, the series spawned an animated adaptation which was released in 2013 and garnered critical acclaim.

Fans around the world were naturally excited when a live action film adaptation was announce in 2014. However, enthusiasm waned a bit when production stills and finally a trailer were released earlier this year. Now even more information about the film has been revealed, including some posters that show the full cast of characters. Netizens’ reactions are mixed, with some decrying that the production values look cheap. Still others take issue with the film’s plot, which changes the background of key characters.

You can’t tell who’s who when you change the characters’ names.

Just awful, looks like something out of the Japan Self-Defense Force even though the original manga had kind of a German vibe.

This feels wrong, because even though the world of the manga has a sort of European feel to it, it’s full of Japanese people.

Why on earth are there original characters?

So they’re really gonna do it.
But what gives, no Levi?

How to put it…you can sense the tension.
It looks like one of those commemorative photos people take at cosplay conventions w

Mika, who’s supposed to be of Japanese ancestry, is a Korean with a the face of a Filipino w

Why is that then they make a film adaptation of a manga they always purposefully try to add some god awful subtitle?

It looks like some kind of amateur collage…

To be honest I’m more worried about Haruma than Mizuhara.

So wrong in so many ways.

It would’ve been better if they’d changed the names completely.

With everyone being Japanese it almost looks like the Japan Self Defense Force. Not cool.

Who is going to watch this?
Only fans of the actors, probably.

Was Mika supposed to be butt-ugly in the original comic?

It depends on how far the filmmakers go to properly depict the dead bodies and scenes

Huh, seems like there are even more complaints coming from overseas than Japan.

If the filmmakers don’t have the actual ability to make the movie then they’re better off not doing it.

Mika being half-Korean is already enough for me to lose interest. Use Japanese actors. Why Koreans?

This isn’t a battle of humanity vs. Titans, it’s Asians vs. Titans

This is probably going to bomb.

Thank God it’s not a manga I like.

Has the live action Dragonball movie taught us nothing?!

    • RaphaeI

Not entirely relevant. The live action DB film was problematic because of nasty white actors who didn’t look the part at all.

      • lonetrey / Dan

It’s like a reverse-DBZ problem now… instead of whitewashing the cast they’ve asian-casted all of them.

        • Mihel

Yeah but it’s impossible for a japanese movie to have 99% of the cast being ethnically non-japanese and just Mika(sa) being japanese.

      • UserID01

No, no, no—- the whitewashed actors were the LEAST of the problem. The absolute least. Everything about that movie was fucking awful. The butchering of the story (for example, Goku in the show was a homeschooled kid raised generally apart from humankind and… kind of an idiot, and in the movie he’s in high school being bullied, wtf?), the awful action choreography scenes, terrible dialogue, bad costume design… the entire movie was just one grand, steaming, festering pile of shit. I have tried several times to watch it, only to feel my organs beginning to fail at the fifteen or twenty minute mark and must change the channel to preserve my own life.

I kind of feel like a lot of anime-turned-live-action movies are generally shit anyway. Like The Last Airbender (I want to chemically erase the memory from my brain) and Street Fighter: The Movie, although the latter was based off of a video game. Some characteristics of a 2D universe just don’t translate well, or at all, to live action.

The only 2D to 3D film I enjoyed was Dead Or Alive. That was good.

“..The live action DB film was problematic because of nasty white actors who didn’t look the part at all.”

        Agreed!

  • MeCampbell30

Meh, I don’t mind the changing of the story so much (or the all Japanese minus-half-of-Mika cast). It could be a tragedy about how modern Japan first fell to the Titan threat . . . or something. What bothers me is that it’s cheaply made. The way the characters are supposed to move, the scale of the titans, and the horror of the human deaths would be tricky to recreate even with a Hollywood blockbuster budget.

“Mika being half-Korean is already enough for me to lose interest. Use Japanese actors. Why Koreans?”

omg who cares if shes half something??

    • fr hy

yeah! asianess is already being destroyed by japan’s white hapa worship

    • UserID01

Mikasa is actually only half Japanese in the show, so… kudos for some semblance of authenticity on behalf of the casting crew?

Am I the only one who got (nightmarish) flashbacks to Battle Royale II?

    • lllllllllllllllllllllllll

Lol, why do you have to remind us of that forgettable film? Now my expectations for the AoT/SnK film just reach an all-time low.

  • lllllllllllllllllllllllll

“Huh, seems like there are even more complaints coming from overseas than Japan.”

This person speaks the truth. Check out the forum posts on ANN, Crunchyroll and other English anime news sites and majority of the people doesn’t like the idea of having a live action adaptation of this series.

    • Guest

if they dont want a live adaptation they can simply ignore it..problem solved

      • poop

it’s not that easy. it’s like when you look in the toilet after you shit. you want to see what kind of shit it turns out to be, even if you know it’s going to be the stinkiest of shit.

        • bumfromkorea

Your eloquence (no sarcasm here) does justice to your name. 😀

  • People shouldn’t be so critical before watching the film.

  • poop

is the creator of this series/franchise an idiot? why would they greenlight this shit

  • Mohamad Taufiq Morshidi

Wow, not only the cast looks awful but everything about it looks awful (even the trailer itself).

But even then, Attack on Titan was nothing more than a garbage franchise that’s basically Shadow of the Colossus but with edgy, unlikable characters.

Shingeki no Kyojin is forever shit
